The S-ClassMuay Thai Wellness Network for Womxn Identified BIPOC Lawyers
The S-Class is a physical and mental wellness program developed by Dr. Yumiko Kawano -- Champion Muay Thai Fighter and Personal Trainer -- and Tamara Sylvester -- Lawyer and Muay Thai Instructor Trainee -- of Krudar Muay Thai Academy. It will teach womxn identified BIPOC lawyers the art of Muay Thai as a form of self-defence, self-care and self-transformation. (WOMXN includes Womyn, Trans-women, Non-binary persons, Femmes, Women and Gender Queer persons).

The Rationale
A legal professional culture that has historically encouraged overworking, worklife imbalance, and perfectionism has resulted in high rates of mental illness and the de-prioritization of self-care among lawyers. These outcomes are more likely to occur among BIPOC womxn-identified lawyers, who face additional challenges and stressors because of systemic racism and sexism in the profession.
Building communities of support was one of the key recommendations cited in the final report of the Challenges Faced by BIPOC Licensees Working Group to eliminate challenges and inequities faced by BIPOC lawyers.
It is hoped that the S-Class will be an accessible and safe community of support and wellness for womxn-identified BIPOC lawyers that will serve to:

- Normalize and revitalize wellness in the legal profession, alongside other initiatives such as the Canadian Bar Association’s Law Needs Well-beingBecause… Campaign.

The People
Yumiko (Yumi) is a personal trainer and Muay Thai instructor with 7+ Years Muay Thai
Experience and Self Defence Training. Yumi was the 2015 Muay Thai Ontario (MTO) Provincial Junior Featherweight Champion and in 2017, a Gold medalist in the Pan Am Muay Thai Championship. Yumi is also a Social Justice PHD Graduate from the University of Toronto. |
Tamara is a lawyer in Ontario who has been practising Muay Thai at Krudar for the
past 3+ years. Muay Thai has been an invaluable source of mental and physical wellbeing for them. Tamara is currently training to become a Muay Thai instructor and their goal is to make Muay Thai accessible to and affordable for BIPOC womxnidentified lawyers to use as a tool for self-care, self-defence and self-transformation. Tamara’s participation in this initiative is entirely on a volunteer basis. |
