FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
MUAY THAI KICKBOXING & FITNESS CLASSES

WHAT IS MUAY THAI?
Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is a stand-up combat sport that traces back some hundreds of years ago to 18th century Thailand, and is now recognized as the national sport and cultural martial art of Thailand. Sometimes referred to as 'The Art of Eight Limbs,' Muay Thai makes use of the entire body, identifying each strike (punch, kick, knee or elbow) as one 'weapon.' In addition to striking, it also utilizes sweeps and the clinch, a form of stand-up neck grappling. Today, Muay Thai is on track to become an Olympic sport, and has garnered popularity all over the world.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MUAY THAI?
Muay Thai is both a physical and mental practice. The conditioning that you undergo to become faster, stronger, more efficient, and more powerful has similar effects on your mind, body and spirit. As you train, you will begin to notice greater confidence in yourself, a stronger sense of discipline and a mental fortitude that reveals itself in other areas of your life.

As martial artists, we are deeply rooted in culture, history and tradition. When we practice Muay Thai, we cultivate strong values, and with each day that we show up, we have the ability to be humbled and inspired, to test our fortitude, our courage, and to build others up with us. When you combine these mental gains with the promise of rippling muscles and a healthier body, there really is no reason to NOT train Muay Thai!
WHAT DO I BRING?
If you've got your own Muay Thai gear (gloves and handwraps), feel free to bring your own! If not, wraps and gloves are available for purchase at the front desk.  We recommend bringing a water bottle, and your own towel if you wish to shower after class. Shorts and a t-shirt are our uniform of choice, but the best clothes are the ones you feel comfy in. Please take off your shoes before stepping on the mats! For more on pricing, click here.

For Bootcamp & Kettlebell: indoor training shoes are optional, but recommended.

Another great thing to bring? Friends! Having someone join you on your first day may help you feel a little more at ease... But if you're going solo, don't worry! Our team's got your back, and you won't be alone for long.
DO YOU HAVE SHOWERS?
Yes! We have showers in each changeroom at both locations. Don't forget to bring your own towel!
HOW EARLY SHOULD I ARRIVE BEFORE CLASS?
We recommend arriving 15 minutes before class  to sign in, get your equipment ready, and do some stretches if needed.
You can also use this time to let your instructor know about any modifications or adjustments you may need before class starts.
HOW Do i advance to the next level?
While each student is unique and will progress at their own pace, it is possible to receive your Blue Shorts within 6 months with consistent training and perseverence. Invitations to attend Yellow Shorts and Blue Shorts testings are issued at the discretion of your Kru.

As with any sport, the physical changes and improvements you see will start to take shape after several weeks of consistent training, but the mental benefits begin immediately. By the end of your first workout, you may just feel like a million bucks! Skin glowing, muscles popping... And get ready to crush some goals, inside and out of the gym, because that feeling just gets stronger every time.

Extra keen to get faster results? Enlist the help of a personal trainer, who will make it their mission to ensure you get stronger, better & faster!
How often should I train?
To achieve your best results, try to aim for 3-5 sessions per week. These can vary by intensity (try a combination of Muay Thai, Kettlebell and Bootcamp), but listen to your body when it needs to rest. After your first training session, your body may need longer to recover, and that is perfectly okay! To maximize muscle recovery (and optimize your GAINS), always aim to take at least one rest day per week, and supplement your training with plenty of stretching, sleep, hydration and balanced nutrition.

Recovery is just as important as training!
Do you allow drop-ins?
Absolutely! We recommend signing up in advance for your first trial class ($10) or drop-in class ($25 after the first visit) here or via our Mindbody app. Signing up in advance will guarantee your spot in class, especially on busy evenings and weekends, when we tend to fill up fast.
Are there lockers available?
At our Kensington location, we have locker banks available for rental in the Underground, as well as the men's and women's changing rooms. Please speak to the front desk if you are interested in using a locker. Unclaimed lockers and items will be cleared out weekly.
WHat If I'm running late for class?
Late arrivals are required to complete a minimum 5 minutes of skipping before joining class, up until 15 minutes past the start time. Arrivals exceeding this 15 minute window are not permitted to join class. Warming your body up properly is essential to preventing injuries, and lateness can be disruptive to both the class and your body's warmup practice. We (and your muscles!) thank you for your consideration.

Luckily, there is a fully equipped facility downstairs (at K1) and past the mats (at K2), equipped with heavy bags, weights and machines, available to all Premium members, should you arrive too late to join class but still want to get your sweat on.
HOW LONG IS A CLASS?
Adult Muay Thai classes are 90 minutes long, and incorporate a skipping warm-up, a conditioning portion, technique and stretching. Kettlebell and Bootcamp classes are 60 minutes long, and also include stretching, warm-up, a sweat session, and cool down.

Kids classes are 45 minutes to an hour long. Full class schedule available here.

All classes include dynamic bodyweight exercises, strength/conditioning and core work. We encourage you to modify anything that is outside of your fitness or skill level, and let the instructor know of any conditions that may prevent you from completing an exercise. Most importantly... have fun!
WHIch level is right for me?
Beginners Muay Thai is suitable for first-timers and intermediates alike, as many advanced students still continue to take Beginners Class to keep their technique on point. All Levels classes are more challenging on the body and may incorporate more advanced techniques, however we welcome students of all levels to take part, and our instructors are happy to offer modifications as needed.

All of our fitness classes, including Kettlebell and Bootcamp are Open Level. Feel free to try one of each, and let us know what you think!

Intermediate classes require Blue Shorts or equivalent, at the discretion of the instructor. If you have prior Muay Thai experience or are interested in joining a sparring or Intermediate class, please call ahead to schedule a chat.
UNIFORM POLICY
All Muay Thai classes require a standard uniform to be worn by all students.  Hand wraps and gloves are mandatory for all classes. You may bring your own or  purchase a pair from the front desk. For sanitary reasons, hand wraps must be owned/purchased, gloves are available for rent. The mandatory uniform also includes a black Krudar T-Shirt and a pair of Muay Thai shorts indicating your level of training. There are three short colours which represent the different levels of training (white, yellow, and blue). Wearing the uniform is essential to helping instructors identify the ranks of students and development / training needs.  Students who are not in full uniform will not be allowed to attend Muay Thai classes. In fitness classes and personal training sessions any workout attire is acceptable. All uniform items are available at the front desk, please visit front desk for more details.
